nGAP Lecturer: Philosophy - South Africa

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

In line with the Department of Higher Education and Training's New Generation Academic Programme (nGAP) and the Faculty of ARTS vision of advancing the revitalization of the humanities. The department of Philosophy seeks to appoint a self- motivated, aspiring Philosophy academic to contribute to the teaching and research responsibilities of the department. This lecturer post will be made in accordance with the university recruitment policy and DHET transformation imperatives. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute meaningfully to the broader academic project of the department particularly in advancing scholarship and teaching in the areas of the philosophy of technology, philosophy of Artificial intelligence (AI) and ethics of AI.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Teaching at both undergraduate and post graduate level with a mixture of large to small classes
  • Supervise honors students independently with option to co-supervise MA students.
  • Conduct research, attend academic conferences and publish to improve the research profile of the faculty.
  • The candidate will be expected to complete PhD within five years from the date of assumptions of duties.
  • Initiating and participate in public and academic engagements.
  • Contribute towards the further strengthen scholarship and teaching of ethics of emerging technologies

CORE COMPETENCIES

  • Knowledge of diverse philosophical fields, with special focus on ethics/ applied ethics/ emerging technologies
  • Ability to teach large classes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Ability to supervise and mentor at postgraduate level
  • Ability to conduct research independently
  • Ability to manage time and deliver high-quality work under pressure
  • The candidate must be technologically competent, e.g. teach online, work with internal institutional systems
  • Ability to work well in a multicultural, diverse and high-pressure environment and to deal with and resolve issues, problems, conflicts, and any crisis situation that may arise
  • Ability to self-manage, maintain professionalism and collegiality within the dynamic higher education environment
  • Ability to engage with the discipline within the scholarship and practice of Engagement

REQUIREMENTS

  • A Masters qualification in philosophy or related field with a 70% Average
  • Proof of registration for a PhD or concrete evidence that candidate will be registering within a year of appointment for PhD philosophy or related fields or an intention to register within a year of appointment in ethics/ ethics of technology or related fields
  • Some teaching or tutoring experience in the discipline Philosophy
  • Potential to publish academically
  • Shortlisted candidates may be requested to undergo some form of competency assessment
