Our Oceanographic Research client is based in Durban, however their work and research extends throughout South Africa and the Western Indian Ocean. They are looking for the skills of senior scientist to lead the Applied Coastal Management research group. The focus will be to investigate relevant coastal management issues and apply research outcomes to science engagement, policy, and decision making. Particular attention must be given to the requirements of the Integrated Coastal Management Act and related legislation, the KZN Coastal Management Programme and the company's role in providing scientific decision support and training to the Provincial authorities responsible for coastal management Duties include: Manage and grow the company Applied Coastal Management portfolio of research projects. Develop innovative applied research projects that support the needs of coastal communities, with a focus on the east coast of Africa, and particularly KZN. Facilitate science to policy, providing scientific advice and decision support to national, provincial, and local government, and developing strategies and techniques that assist with the wise implementation of coastal management. Undertake science engagement with the public and undertake citizen science projects to raise awareness of the coastal environment and the need for appropriate management. Ensure the development of human capacity in the coastal management discipline through stakeholder training programmes, staff mentorship and the supervision of postgraduate students. Publish the results of research and related activities in the appropriate format, including high impact factor peer-reviewed journals, professional project reports, and popular articles. Participate in relevant committees, attend meetings, review documents, and contribute to appropriate forums relating to coastal management matters. The criteria Preferably a PhD, but a minimum requirement of a master's degree in environmental science or in a field of research pertinent to coastal management - minimum of 10 years relevant experience. Sound knowledge of the relevant policies, legislation and scientific literature relating to coastal management, with proven research experience in the field, supported by relevant, peer-reviewed publications and reports. Excellent and demonstrable project, financial, and staff management skills. Excellent communication skills, particularly report writing, training and ability to present to diverse stakeholders, the capacity to chair high level stakeholder meetings Additional competencies required include GIS, remote sensing, spatial data analysis, and management of public participation in coastal management processes. Experience with website development and maintenance would be an advantage, as well as a broader appreciation of marine ecology and marine resources. Market related plus benefits Apply Now
