PURPOSE: Describe what is the major purpose of the position: WHY does this position exist, HOW is it done and WHAT are the major expectations end results To accurately and timeously measure, predict and match colour properties (including tint strength) of materials as and when required for in-process using correct and calibrated colour measurement equipment/software, according to an approved test method and within safe operating practices. This role facilitates the quality approval process, ensuring high quality standards are maintained by only passing materials that fall within the colour specifications. Good lab practices will be followed and all colour related equipment used will be maintained as required before use. A colour physics based rationale is required to recommend adjustments when the material's colour properties do not fall within specification. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE JOB Perform routine and non-routine colour matching of finished goods, intermediates and semi-finished goods, accurate to the correct decimal and according to the relevant Test Method against the correct standard (draw-down/spray out/visual colour inspection against standard etc.), to verify and ensure quality conformance to the material's QC specifications. Perform colour related testing of retain/warehouse/customer samples and support root cause analysis as required for investigation of customer complaints. Immediate recording and logging of results onto the SQC pack/Manual PO/relevant SAP screen and any other relevant test record sheets. Timeous, accurate and correct filing of records (results/batch cards, checklists, draw-downs, retain samples etc.) ensuring availability of records for data and root cause analysis. Inform the relevant persons on the outcomes of the QC test (e.g. inform QC Technician/QC Lab Assistant to continue with remaining tests). Approve colour related properties that meet the specifications. Consult on other QC parameters that may affect colour properties. Recommend adjustments for colour related non-conformances under the supervision of the relevant Chemist/QC Supervisor, with the use of small scale lab tests as required. Recommend additions with the assistance of the colour software and/or batch additions history where available, and perform tinter/colourant addition to the batch with the assistance of the relevant operator in the production team. Arrange for transport of tinters/colourants to production vessel as required. Record and report possible deviations/non-conformances observed during testing/auditing to the QC Supervisor/relevant Chemist/Factory Technical Manager. Monitor the stock levels of the colourants/stainers/tinters (track usage per batch in a log book) and report any low stock levels to QC Supervisor/Factory Technical Manager. Ensuring completion of batch card/Manual PO/Master recipe information required to be entered during production (including amount of tinters used). Make recommendations to improve FTR to relevant Chemist/Factory Technical Manager (for example what tinters are selected for use for optimization of Master Recipe). Calculate dwell time for all tests as required and make recommendations to improve dwell times to Factory Chemist/Factory Technical Manager. Maintain colour related QC equipment and colour software/tinting records in excellent condition and ensure that equipment is calibrated/verified before use. - Report any concerns. - Update calibration/verification record indicating the date and details of the calibration/verification. Ensure these are retrievable. - Keep records of calibration certificates. Ensure these are retrievable. Support production: - minimise rejects that are QC related - participate in stock takes on site - work on a shift basis as required - assist with required reworks of redundant/quarantined stocks that are colour related. Perform and monitor Housekeeping (5S) of laboratory, retain sample store and aspects of the plant affecting product quality. Accountable for accepting and leaving work station in a good working order, according to good lab practice. Supports team forums and contribute continuous improvement ideas pertaining to products and processes. Contributes towards improving the departments performance on KPIs. Participate in and contribute to the overall to the maintenance ISO 9001, ISO14001 and OHSAS 18001 systems and standards. Support high Safety, Quality and Environmental standards and initiatives through the reporting of spillages and incidents and ensuring that the risk profile of the plant is kept low. Adhering to all relevant legislation, ensuring sound corporate governance. Achieving service levels and maximising internal and external customers satisfaction, providing excellent Customer Service - especially in urgencies. Delays are communicated. KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Education (minimum level of education or educational qualification required to perform this job Diploma in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry OR Matric with Maths and Science with SAPMA 1, 2 and 6 (studying towards a Diploma in either Chemistry or Chemical Engineering) Experience (if the position requires the above schooling, how many months or years relevant working experience would be required, as a minimum, to learn the position requirements in order to achieve competence?) 2 years of experience in tinting of inks, colourants or paints Apply Now
