Head of Shipping: Imports and Exports - GMP - South Africa

JOB DESCRIPTION To manage, direct and oversee, a Shipping Division encompassing both Inbound and Outbound activities end to end for the TFG Retail organisation. To provide and make a positive contribution towards the strategic intent of the Shipping Division, to align with, and to support the relevant Trading Divisions procurement strategies and brand positioning. To ensure that the agreed Shipping Service Mandate as outlined by the Shipping Division aligned to Brand requirements, are maintained, and implemented within the agreed Service Level Agreements ensuring consistency and compliancy across all relevant stakeholders and across all relevant geographies e.g Local; Regional and Global. The role involves strategic planning, managing supply chain objectives for shipping, optimizing processes, strong negotiation skills and ability to lead teams to achieve business goals and customer satisfaction. Key Responsibilities: Lead, manage, develop, collaborate, and motivate direct reports to achieve high performance - provide focus, assignments, motivation, support and coaching, rewards, and recognition. Collaborate with both internal and external operational teams to address supply chain issues and implement corrective actions. Identify and solve problems related to the supply chain landscape that can impact on the Shipping service framework and consider alternative solutions. Ability to service a Retail organisation with multiple product types ensuring we can support their OTIF requirements whilst protecting margin Ensure relevant/customised procedures are in place to support the various shipping operations that fall within the portfolio in order to deliver an effective service. Monitor both team members and Service Providers on an ongoing basis, re-negotiating deliverables where required. Management of negotiated SLA's is critical. Collect, organise, analyse and critically evaluate local and international trends relevant to area of accountability so that emerging trends can be timeously highlighted to the business in order for it to be considered for implementation. Gather information from applicable sources and reach consensus with all the internal stakeholders and relevant Trading Divisions on the need for changes or shifts in approach to be considered due to shifts in the Shipping landscape. Act as a liaison between internal teams and external service providers (e.g. freight forwarding and clearing partners) to communicate SLA's and conformance expectations and address any concerns or challenges, with all key stakeholders. Facilitate monthly Shipping conformance meetings with trading divisions to discuss action plans and involvement requirements. Negotiate new contracts, freight rates, project outputs and service agreements in accordance with the changing needs of the business. Ensure all key stakeholders are aware of the Supply Chain requirements and understand the impact thereof through effective communication sessions. Research opportunity areas/areas of concern by analysing shipping performance metrics, discussing with colleagues and contacting outside sources if necessary. E.g. Carriers Utilise the appropriate technology effectively in order to benchmark and thereafter develop appropriate service levels relevant to area of accountability, thereby establishing the required framework specific to service delivery. Manage the assessment of new business and Trading Divisions requirements according to set supply chain criteria. (regulations, systems and procedures). Utilise data analytics tools to monitor and analyse key performance indicators related to shipping and all supply chain relevant activities. Maintain accurate records and documentation related to supply chain and shipping activities. Analyse and evaluate a range of historical data and trends for determining future financial budget for area of responsibility. Manage budget for the entire Division in terms of costs and expenditure and identify cost saving opportunities. Analyse current financial data and prepare future financial forecast. Understand the relationship between supply chain activities and improved service delivery and the cost thereof. Be able to negotiate Freight rates ensuring the best possible outcome for the broader organisation whilst minimising margin impact. Identify potential risks in the supply chain and develop strategies to mitigate those risks, with a focus on preventing defects, ensuring product safety, and maintaining brand reputation. Stay abreast of industry trends, regulatory changes, and emerging risks to proactively address challenges. Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including employees, customers, suppliers, service providers and advocacy groups, to drive ethical business practices within area of accountability. Communicate the company's commitment of ethical compliance (AEO) and solicit feedback and input from stakeholders, aligned to TFG's commitment towards ensuring the international supply chain is secure and has customs control procedures that meet Authorised Economic Operator standards and criteria. Participate in industry forums and initiatives related to area of accountability Manage the P & L for assigned Division/Cost centre. Take the necessary corrective action. Qualifications and Experience: A relevant three-year qualification is desirable. A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in the shipping industry is essential. Experience in a Retail framework would be beneficial. At least 10 years of experience in project management is required. A minimum of 10 years of experience in team management is essential. 5 to 10 years of experience in financial management is required. Ability to manage AEO requirements and drive that conformance mandate Skills: Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret data, generate insights, and make data-driven decisions. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization. Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire a team, fostering a positive work environment and driving results. Strategic mindset with a focus on long-term growth and sustainability.
