NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) DIVISION: DVC RESEARCH AND INNOVATION DEPARTMENT: NWU LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES POSITION NUMBER: N000242 POSITION: LIBRARY ASSISTANT PEROMNES GRADE: P13 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT NOTE: THOSE WHO HAVE PREVIOUSLY APPLIED FOR THIS POSITION NEED NOT REAPPLY AS THE UNIVERSITY HAS YOUR APPLICATION PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: The Library Assistant's role is to provide prompt, informed, and efficient service to library users at the circulation desk and Reserved Books section in the Education Library. The Library Assistant fills one of the primary front-line customer service positions and is essential to the proper functioning of the Library. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Reserved and Prescribed Books : Liaise with Facility about prescribed books and books that need to be reserved. Collect books from the shelves and/or recall books that are checked out. Prepare books for the Reserved and Prescribed books collections. Make changes to the relevant records in the Library Management System. Issue, check in and reshelve reserved and prescribed books. 2. General services and services at Circulation Desk : Register users. Issue, check in and renew library material. Give general catalogue assistance and help with the location of books on the shelves. Assist with bookings of seminar rooms. Book sources in use on request of users. Supply books for document delivery and interlibrary loans. Identify damaged books and send for binding or weeding. Shelve books and do shelf reading as required. 3. Financial management of cash register: Accept cash for fines. Handle transactions for Referencing Guides. Handle transactions of visitors to the library. Send money received to Ferdinand Postma library. 4. Collection Development : Make suggestions to Senior Librarian regarding gaps in the collection. Inform staff of new editions of reserved and prescribed books. 5. Ad Hoc: Assist with library projects. Assist with any other tasks as requested by Senior Librarian or Manager: Information Services. Weekend and after-hours duties when required. · Grade 12 (NQF level 4) or a Certificate (NQF level 4) in Library and/or Information Science. · A minimum of 1 year's experience working in an academic library. RECOMMENDATION / ADDED ADVANTAGE: · Experience in client service. KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES: · Must be computer literate. · Ability to master the library management system. · Familiarity with the Dewey Decimal Classification system (DDC). BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES: · Good communications · Problem Solver · Client Support · Able to operate cash register. REMUNERATION: The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
