Our Client based in Durban is looking for a Principal Engineer to join their team. Responsible for developing concepts, prototypes, designs, and drawings of parts/components to manufacture. Create and test new product designs and formulate manufacturing specifications. Conduct product research which includes identifying the needs and goals for a new product, from functional design to aesthetics requirements. Create designs using CAD 3D software and fabricate models that can be tested. Utilise software for FEA analysis. Research and analyse different materials, manufacturing processes, design tolerances and other factors in the developmental process. Conduct testing using both internal and external resources to meet customer specific requirements. After refining and reviewing initial designs, the principal engineer must then deliver specifications and procedures to manufacturing teams in order that the product can be successfully manufactured. Able to work efficiently to meet the strategic goals of the company and to satisfy customer requirements. Management of the design project team to achieve project objectives, milestones and timeframes. To ensure hand overs of products, processes and documentation to production are conducted and adequately communicating all critical characteristics and quality information appropriately. New product development to meet customer specification and comply with both internal and external systems requirements within the agreed upon timeline. Initiate and develop and product development procedures, protocols and work instructions etc. Manage and implement the Maintenance Quality Assurance systems, ensuring compliance to ISO standards. Ensure health and safety compliance and facilitate health and safety improvement programs to continually improve upon identified risks. Implement and maintain robust 5S systems within the workplace. Management of key customer and supplier relationships. Provide input into the budget process for Capex spend appropriate to the development team needs. Initiate requests for CAPEX/Disposal/Transfers and promote good Corporate Governance. Diploma/Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Proven work experience as a Principal Engineer leading a team. Proven experience within a manufacturing environment, ideally in the automotive sector. Knowledge and experience of IATF core tools as well as ISO standards. Competent in using 3D CAD modelling software. Basic manufacturing and fabrication process knowledge and experience, i.e. CNC, laser cutting, robotics, welding etc. Knowledge of design engineering and project management skills.
