NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) DEPARTMENT: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY - ELECTRONIC SERVICES POSITION NUMBER: N003025 POSITION: SENIOR TECHNICIAN PEROMNES GRADE: P9 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: The successful candidate will be based in Potchefstroom and report directly to the Maintenance Manager at IT-Electronic Services. The candidate needs to be an established leader in this field, primarily responsible for high-level maintenance, condition assessment / replacement programs and assignable duties concerning electronics across all sites of delivery of the NWU. The Senior Technician will work closely with technical staff across IT and take responsibility for the following: Communication (written/verbal) with clients, colleagues, suppliers, and contractors Be involved in- or guide technical staff / contractors / service delivery for: fault finding and repair of difficult / escalated faults on site; final quality assurance audits on newly completed installations; minor/micro installations of systems according to established inhouse project practices; condition based assessments on various systems across the NWU and write reports; projects based on condition assessments per existing practices in ITES; and 30% of other assignable duties. Regular, full (written/verbal) reports to be given to the manager with respect to all issues mentioned above. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Assignable duties 2. Planning preventative maintenance or replacement & supporting other campuses A bachelor's degree/ Advanced Diploma (NQF level 7) in Electronics. A valid code EB driver's license. A minimum of 5 years' experience in soldering, use of power tools & ladders, identifying electronic components and cables. A minimum of 5 years' experience in advanced electronics fault-finding including Ethernet and Wi-Fi-based TCP/IP environments, network and digital environments. A minimum of 2 years' experience managing version control of software and firmware on electronic equipment, adjusting settings to prescribed & loading updates. A minimum of 2 years' experience doing condition-based assessments, writing reports, planning & budgeting to replace required systems or plan preventative maintenance as may be required to maintain well-working, healthy systems. A minimum of 2 years' experience doing quality assurance, update snag lists, note exceptions and drive quality upwards by reporting regular and important deviations. A minimum of 2 years' experience liaising with contractors, clients, and technical staff on maintaining systems and training to use, maintain or replace systems. RECOMMENDATIONS / ADDED ADVANTAGES: A Diploma (NQF level 6) in Networking, Service Maintenance and Software. Avixa accreditation. Fire alarms SANS 10139 training. Registration as a PSIRA Technician. KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES: In-depth knowledge, understanding, troubleshooting and assessment of: sound systems, amplifier, communication, TV distribution systems (analogue and digital), analogue and digital fire alarm systems, intruder alarm system, access control system, IP CCTV, audio-visual, and e- conference systems. Ability to use different cables, connector types and be able to solder efficiently. Efficient use of electronic measuring instruments. Knowledge of fault-tracing of equipment on networks, version control, patching, settings and defaults. Ability to accurately judge the quality of new installations, longevity of current technologies and assess the condition of electronic systems installed in buildings and elsewhere. Knowledge and use of all office and corporate software. Ability to train other people in the use of technology. Safe working practises and knowledge of SHE requirements that need to be adhered to. Ability to influence contractors and staff positively.
