Universal Recycling Company (Pty) Ltd is a ferrous and non-ferrous metal recycling plant in Industria, Johannesburg. We are looking for a Transport and Logistics Coordinator to join our team. A logistics and transport manager plays a pivotal role in the supply chain, ensuring that goods are efficiently transported from the point of origin to the final destination. Their responsibilities encompass various aspects of logistics, from planning and coordinating shipments to managing inventory and ensuring compliance with regulations. Here are the key duties and responsibilities of a transport and logistics manager: Transportation Planning : Plan and schedule transportation routes and deliveries to optimise efficiency and reduce costs. Coordinate with other departments to understand transportation needs and requirements. Inventory Management : Monitor and manage inventory levels to ensure adequate stock is available to meet customer demand. Coordinate with yard and stores staff to manage incoming and outgoing shipments and maintain accurate inventory records. Conduct regular inventory audits and reconcile any discrepancies. Vendor and Carrier Management : Establish and maintain relationships with transportation providers, including trucking companies, freight forwarders, and courier services. Negotiate rates and contracts with carriers to ensure competitive pricing and reliable service. Evaluate carrier performance and address any issues or concerns. Load Planning and Optimisation : Plan and optimise the loading of vehicles to maximise space utilisation and minimise transportation costs. Ensure that goods are properly packed and secured for transportation. Logistics Planning and Optimisation : Develop and implement logistics strategies to optimise the movement of goods and reduce costs. Plan and optimise transportation routes to improve efficiency and minimise delivery times. Utilise logistics software and tools to streamline operations and improve performance. Tracking and Monitoring : Monitor and track the progress of shipments, providing updates to relevant stakeholders. Use transportation management systems (TMS) and GPS tracking to ensure real-time visibility of shipments. Stay updated on new technologies and best practices in logistics and supply chain management. Compliance and Documentation : Ensure compliance with local and national regulations related to the transportation of goods. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of shipments, inventory, and transportation activities. Prepare reports and documentation for regulatory agencies as required. Implement and enforce safety procedures and protocols to protect workers and goods. Problem Solving and Issue Resolution : Address and resolve any issues or delays that arise during the transportation and delivery process. Investigate and report on incidents such as lost or damaged shipments. Investigate and report on transportation incidents, such as accidents or damage to goods. Implement corrective actions to prevent future occurrences. Customer Service : Provide excellent customer service by ensuring timely and accurate delivery of goods. Communicate with customers regarding shipment status, delays, and any issues that may arise. Handle customer inquiries and complaints related to logistics and delivery. Cost Management : Monitor and control logistics costs, identifying opportunities for cost savings. Prepare and manage logistics budgets, analysing expenditures and financial reports. Implement cost-effective strategies and negotiate favourable terms with vendors and carriers. Documentation and Reporting : Maintain accurate records of transportation activities, including shipment details, expenses, and carrier performance. Prepare reports on transportation performance, identifying areas for improvement. Team Coordination and Support : Coordinate and supervise the activities of transportation staff, including drivers and logistics personnel. Collaborate with warehouse, transportation, and customer service teams to ensure smooth operations. Provide training and support to team members as needed. Foster a positive and productive working environment. Ad-hoc duties: Handling of petty cash. Stock taking. Weekend plant supervising. Stock / plant reporting. Assist on Weighbridge when necessary. Previous experience in transport and logistics coordinating. Previous experience in managing drivers. Strong organisational skills. Attention to detail. Ability to multitask.
